ABOUT

A collection of choreographic solos conceived as a series of portraits.

The project continues a body of research and creation exploring Caribbean rites and mythologies. It is conceived as a space for exploration and experimentation engaging bodies, breath, and voice. The intention is to awaken ghosts, to question buried myths, and to reinvent a heroic imaginary. It proposes a research process that is both intimate and universal, examining our improvised identity constructions and the pull of bodies navigating composite identities.

For this project, Clémence Baubant revisits the Véyés ritual and invites two performers from different aesthetic backgrounds and training paths to intertwine their embodied narratives.

The creation draws on a framework of inspirations and intimate stories: the iconic figure of Joséphine Baker, the Caribbean mythological figure of Maman Dlo, and the vocal practice of Bouladjel in Guadeloupe. The piece explores ghosts, myths, and ancestral rites that continue to leave traces within contemporary physicalities. Parades unfolds as a ritual outside of time, where past, present, and future converge.

“The question of trace — of how bodies are traversed by certain memories and carry others forward — lies at the core of my research. In this wake, Parades is above all a space of experimentation, weaving in the feminine a dialogue between bodies, breath, inheritances, and voices.”
— Clémence Baubant
